The Senate reacts to the incident that occurred in Majiya, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State as a result of the explosion of the petrol tanker.
The tanker was traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State before overturning near Khadija University in Majiya.
The incident took the lives of over ninety people and left the rest who tried to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker injured. The injured victims are currently in the hospital receiving treatment.
The Senate have directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to create public awareness to educate the public on the risk associated with scooping fuel especially when accidents are involved.
Senator Hussaini Uba lamented on how the incident claimed so many lives. He underscored the significance of the public awareness and how it can help to alleviate such tragic situations.
He also pleaded with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) to take swift actions in ensuring that the necessary materials are distributed to the bereaved family and survivors.
The Senate suggested that the necessary measures will be taken to care of injured victims.
DSP Lawan Adam, Jigawa State’s Police Public Relations Officer,stated that the accident was preventable not until the local residents clustered around to scoop fuel.
The decision to create public awareness is to educate the people on potential hazards of scooping fuel from such accident scenes.
