The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urges federal government to allow nurses to seek opportunities abroad.
While he was speaking at St. Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha, he donated the sum of N20 million and to Shanahan University, he donated N50 million.
He emphasized on the significant role of health professionals and education in the country and highlighted that they are important investments for the future.
He stated that he does not agree with notion “brain drain” emphasizing on how Nigeria’s population of over 200million can still contribute to the workforce of the country. He highlighted the importance of training more health professionals.
He encouraged the students to invest more in their education and career in order to be successful as nursing and midwifery skills are highly demanded worldwide.
He reveals his plan of creating more opportunities for Nigerians even if they want to stay back or seek greener pastures in foreign nations.
In his words, he said, “We have 200 million people, let us educate them. Let those who want go out to go and those who want to stay should stay. Diaspora remittance is also a form of revenue generation.
“If you see me going round trying to donate, it is not anything but because we want to make life better for you all. I came here so I can donate to you.
“My children will not attend that university (Shanahan University), and I can sit down and use the money to add more chieftaincy to my name, but that is not be how to develop the future.
“I will be in college of nursing Anyingba tomorrow, they need my assistance to get accreditation and I will be there to support them, so that they can get.”
