On Thursday, Mali’s junta appointed General Abdoulaye Maiga as the new prime minister after dismissing civilian premier Choguel Kokalla Maiga from office a day earlier following his criticism of the military leaders.
Previously, Maiga served as the government’s spokesman.The West African country, which has been struggling with jihadist and separatist violence, has been led by the military since a series of coups in 2020 and 2021.
A decree issued by junta chief General Assimi Goita and read out by the secretary general of the presidency on state television station ORTM stated that Major General Abdoulaye Maiga has been appointed as the prime minister.
Abdoulaye Maiga was not included in the first group of colonels who overthrew the civilian president in August 2020.
