According to reports, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, may be resigning from his position this coming week.
This report is as a result of the outcome of the meeting held in Akure, Ondo State, among PDP governors on Monday and Tuesday.
Due to the increasing conflict within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the governors are seeking for unity and peace to ensure the party is under control ahead of the 2024 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. This is to ensure stability in the party.
Top officials that were present in the meeting are; Damagum, PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, and several governors, such as Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The governors suggested that Damagum should not step down from his position until the NEC meeting is able to finalize a North-Central nominee for the party’s chairmanship.
Reports had it that most of the governors such as Ademola Adeleke expressed deep concern about the conflict that surfaced in the party and how it could be detrimental to their political ambitions.
Governor Ademola Adeleke lamented on how factionalism could hinder his political ambition of re-election in 2026.
The next agenda for the NEC meeting which is scheduled for October 24, is likely to approve the Chairmanship decision and confirm dates for a national convention.
